Reverse Job Fair: Walter Smith

Walter Smith is a US Marine Corp Veteran who served on Active Duty for 4 years, from 04/26/1966 to 04/ 24/1970. He was referred to DVOPS Higgins as a Chapter 31, VET-90 referral from Zachary Ludi, Veteran Program Manager, Veterans’ Workforce Services in Columbus, OH. His Significant Barriers to Employment (SBE) were identified as a Special Disabled Veteran with over 30% VA Service Connected Disability Rating. DVOPS Higgins scheduled a face to face meeting with Veteran Smith to begin Assigned Intensive Services. During a follow-up appointment, DVOPS Higgins and Veteran Smith developed an Employability Development Plan (EDP) designed exclusively for Veteran Smith to address the SBE that prevented him from gaining full time employment. Veteran Smith agreed and signed the EDP. DVOPS Higgins referred Veteran Smith to the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) section for resume writing, job search skills, and interviewing tactics.

Veteran Smith attended WIA Orientation, updated his resume, improved his job search skills, and practiced interviewing with DVOPS Higgins. On 11/02/2014 Veteran Smith was referred to Fed Ex in Vandalia, Ohio for a Delivery Driver position. On 1 1/04/2014, Veteran Smith called DVOPS to advise that he had interviewed for the full time Delivery Driver position with Fed Ex located in Vandalia Ohio. Shortly, the Veteran was contacted by human resources that he was hired with a starting wage at $12.50 per hour and to report to work on 11/07/2014. Veteran Smith called DVOPS Higgins and gave the good news. Unfortunately, after 3 days working for Fed Ex, Veteran Smith lost his wife after a very short illness. Veteran gave notice to Fed Ex that he would not be returning to their employment. After the Veteran had time to grieve for 2 weeks, DVOPS Higgins reassumed closely working with Veteran Smith.

On January 14, 2015, the Veteran attended the Reverse Job Fair at Wright Paterson Air Force Base, Fairborn Ohio. On March 05, 2015, Veteran Smith informed DVOPS that he was contacted by Rider in Dayton Ohio to interview for the Tech 1 Mechanic Position. This contact was made from the Reverse Job Fair which Veteran Smith attended. On 03/16/2015, Veteran Smith called DVOPS to advise that he had interviewed for the full time Tech 1 Mechanic position. Shortly thereafter, the Veteran was contacted by human resources that he was hired with a starting wage of $27.23 per hour and to report to work on 03/17/2015. Veteran Smith called DVOPS Higgins and gave the good news. Veteran Smith expressed his appreciation and gratitude for DVOPS Higgins efforts in supporting him in obtaining desired employment.
