Renewing Previous Skills: Gene Bryan’s Story

Gene Bryan came to see the DVOP after he lost his position as an apartment maintenance technician due to corporate realignment. His wife had just taken a part-time job making minimum wage and Mr. Bryan was receiving unemployment but they were barely making it and were down to one car, the other one needed repairs to make it suitable to drive.

Mr. Bryan had previously been a journeyman ironworker and had let his union membership lapse when he took the maintenance position. He was seeking a way to be reinstated and was willing to travel. After he was able to secure a letter stating that he would be able to work after reinstatement; VSTS funding was provided to the veteran and his reinstatement was issued. Ohio Means Jobs Marion County assisted the veteran with paying his electric bill through the Ohio Edison Fund and the vet was able to use that money to make his car repair. He was offered a position in Kentucky at 26.9 an hour but would need lodging and fuel to get to Kentucky.

The DVOP arranged, through Goodwill for the veteran to get a 100.00 gas card to get him to Kentucky and also utilized VST8 funding to help pay for the veterans stay until he began receiving a paycheck. The veteran also enrolled in Hilton Honors Points and the DVOP is working on the veteran program to see if we can get him reward points to help assist with some of his stay.

Due to these efforts, the veteran began employment at the Bluegrass Army Depot in Richmond Kentucky on March 16, 2015 at a starting rate of 26.97 and is well on his way to getting he and his wife back on their feet.
