Transitioning Back into the Healthcare Workforce

Matt H. is a trained EMT with an Associate's Degree, but fell on hard times. Matt became homeless, lost his job and driver's license due to legal matters. DVOP Craig Wieczorek had been working with Matt since April 2010 and referred him to the VA Homeless Program Counselor, Mike Novitski. Matt H. was then guided to the VA Clinic in Toledo and went through his primary care provider to obtain the necessary referrals and examinations to make application to the Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) program through the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). On July 13, 2011 Matt was accepted into the VA CWT program and was assigned to the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan working as a patient transporter. Matt was provided shelter in transitional housing in Westland, Michigan with the possibility of obtaining residence in Ann Arbor after completion of his probationary period. Upon follow-up, Matt stated he is doing well, making the transition back into the healthcare workforce and there is a possibility of obtaining full-time employment with the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor. Matt stated he has begun the process to obtain his driver's license and reinstate his EMT certification.
