Transitioning Service Member Finds Work

Jason, a recently separated disabled U.S. Army veteran, visited the OhioMeansJobs center in Union County. He met with Chris, a local Disabled Veteran Outreach Program (DVOP) Specialist for employment assistance to help him transition to civilian life. Chris referred Jason to the Union County Veterans Service Commission for temporary financial assistance and for help filing for an increase of his service-connected disability (SCD) claim.

Chris assisted Jason in creating a new resume that incorporated and translated his 14 years of military experience into civilian terminology. Chris provided career guidance on the local labor market and information on in-demand careers that would be a good fit for him based on his experience. Chris encouraged Jason to focus his job search on operations management since his military experience most closely matched it. Jason and Chris met and practiced interviewing, including removing military jargon. Chris also provided information about the OhioMeansJobs.com Practice Interviews tool so the Jason could continue to practice at home.

Once his resume was squared away and he felt confident in interviewing, Jason immediately started applying for positions in the operations field. After a couple weeks, Jason was interviewed by a prominent moving and storage employer. Jason took advantage of the resources provided to him, he performed outstanding on the interview and was offered a director of operations position. He is now working full-time making $65,000 a year with full benefits. Jason loves his new job where he is responsible for the recruiting, hiring, training and onboarding of new hires as well as creation of custom training plans that focus on retention. He says that it’s challenging to find the right candidates, but it is rewarding when finds them. We wish Jason the best and hope that he’s able to hire military veterans like himself. #HireAVeteran
