Without High School Diploma to Employed

George arrived at the OhioMeansJobs Columbus - Franklin County center and was referred to Craig, a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program (DVOP) Specialist for employment assistance. George was a low-income Vietnam-Era veteran with some physical limitations that prevented him from doing heavy lifting. George shared he was in eleventh grade in high school when he volunteered to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps as an infantry rifleman. He was honorably discharged after two years of active service and spent time overseas. He had applied for a Veterans Affairs service-connected disability and was denied. George explained he was having difficulty finding work without a high school diploma. When Craig explained that Vietnam veterans can get their diploma without the hassle or embarrassment of returning to school, George began to weep.

Craig referred George to the Franklin County Veterans Service Commission to begin the process and to refile his disability claim. Craig helped George update his resume, provided job leads and assisted him with several online applications. A few months after applying to get his high school diploma, Columbus City Schools presented George an honorary diploma at the OhioMeansJobs center. George was also able to secure full-time employment as a Security Officer making $13/hour. Craig stated that George is happy at his current position and that he was extremely grateful for the DVOPs efforts. We’re glad we could help!
