VA VR&E & OhioMeansJobs, a Partnership that Works

Brett served a combined 18-years of honorable service in the Military Police Corps of the U.S. Army and Army Reserve, culminating in the support of the U.S. Mission during Operation Desert Shield and Storm.  After his Army service, Brett returned home to Dayton, Ohio, where he eventually went back to school using Department of Veterans Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation and Education (VA VR&E) benefits to prepare him for his career passion of serving military veterans like himself. Little did he know that when he started the program, that the VA VR&E partners with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services to help VR&E graduates find employment as close to graduation as possible to avoid possible financial hardships. As Brett neared the completion of his Master of Science in vocational rehabilitation from Wright State University, he was referred to Dan, a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program (DVOP) Specialist at the OhioMeansJobs center in Montgomery County for assistance in securing employment.

Brett met with Dan prior to his graduation date and offered resume advice and guidance, which enabled Brett to develop a resume encapsulating both his education and breadth of experience working with veterans.  Brett applied the information, resources, and strategies Dan provided to his job search and it resulted in multiple interview requests. Dan helped Bret prepare for the interviews and coached him in applying the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method framework to help him answer behavioral interview questions. As a result of both their hard work and efforts, Brett was offered an opportunity serving the veteran community as a DVOP in Cincinnati, Ohio.
