Former Unemployed Veteran Pays It Forward

Greg, a ten-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, was laid off by his employer after 23 years’ service as a product manager. He was referred to the OhioMeansJobs center in Greene County where he met with Doug, a Disabled veterans Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) for employment assistance.

While visiting the OhioMeansJobs center, Greg received services from both the Doug and partner staff within the center. They worked with Greg on updating his resume and interview skills. They also shared educational resources such as the Veterans Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment (VR&E) program, Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA) and ApprenticeOhio opportunities within the local area and Ohio.

Ultimately, Greg pursued a career based on his extended background and experience in project and product management. Doug provided Greg tailored job leads focusing on his experience. Greg applied for several positions and went on several interviews but continued to be overlooked. Doug adjusted his approach and began providing placement assistance with employers.  Doug provided strong recommendations on the veteran’s behalf and highlight his many years of successes and experience to employer contacts. As a result, Greg was offered a position with the U.S. Census Bureau in Dayton as a regional office operations supervisor.

While only a temporary assignment, Greg was thankful for the opportunity to gain new skills and experience, not to mention the income. As of writing this, he serves as an employer contact, helping other veterans obtain employment with the federal government. Greg’s willingness to help other veterans gain employment is appreciated by all.
